letter to the zoo [02 Jul 2007|12:07am]
Dear Cherriene,

Today we took our overseas guests to the zoo and the night safari. We all enjoyed ourselves and were wowed by the animals, the habitats, the landscapes and as a Singaporean I was proud to show off my country's main tourist attraction that has won countless accolades. There was never a dull moment because of excellent planning and marketing by the zoo.

However, I would like to point the following out to your department:-

1. No recycle bins
A typical tourist attraction is bound to have its visitors consuming food and beverage at a high rate. While visitors are willing to pay 4 times the normal retail price of beverages and consume 1 at say every 2 trails or resthouses, I think the zoo should only be fair to the environment by providing recycle bins distributed densely. I find it ironic that there are storyboards at the zoo teaching ecology but not one recycle bin is in sight. Maybe there were a few that we failed to come across (although we covered both parks thoroughly). But more are needed! Practice what you preach. There was a segment in the Creatures of the Night show that featured otters distributing bottles and cans into respective bins. Go figure how the zoo is contradicting and embarrassing itself by attempting to educate visitors and failing to practice it. The zoo with its broad legion of fans is in the best position to educate and practice ecology.

2. Not enough no smoking signs
We saw people smoking in the zoo. I had a good mind to tell them off but there was no no-smoking sign to justify it.

3. Suffering animals
You have been through the debate before but I will repeat them: Inuka, the carriage horses and the piggy-back elephants should not go through what they go through. As a world class zoo, do draw the line between zoology and cruelty.

4. Weak no flash policy
We understand that your staff have to remain diplomatic towards ignorant or plainly stupid visitors who turn on their flash. It is obvious that the gentle warnings are not good enough to stop the madness at the expense of the animals. Stronger and bolder warnings should be given. A fine. A bouncer to approach the offender. Pre-warn not to use the flash before presenting the animal during the show or tram ride. We can anticipate when the camera will snap - which is when the animal appears before the audience. Warn first and then present it. Have staff that look strong and intimidating to walk up and down the aisles to deter offenders. If the entire stadium can stand silent during the pledge on national day, the night safari can stop the flashes and lights from cameras - if it has the guts to. Choose between undeserving visitors and the animal friends that you truly care for. Make the choice. Showing toughness and guts will not hurt your reputation. Most likely you will get lauded.

We hope that our next visit with other friends will be a better one.

Thank you.

This song is called Alice's Restaurant, and it's about Alice, and the
restaurant, but Alice's Restaurant is not the name of the restaurant,
that's just the name of the song, and that's why I called the song Alice's
Restaurant.
